Laparoscopic
Surgery
Hand
Assisted and Single Port Incision Surgery
Hand-assisted
or total laparoscopic nephrectomy to remove
a cancerous kidney is a relatively new surgical
technique with the advantages of a small incision,
short hospital stay, and fast recovery time
when compared to traditional open surgery.
Our surgeons have been trained to perform
this procedure. Not every patient is a candidate
for laparoscopic surgery so be sure to discuss
this option with one of our doctors. Our goal
is for you to return to a normal state of
mind, body, and health as soon as it is possible.
A
newer laparoscopic techinque is for single
port incision (SPI) surgery, which is an advanced
laparoscopic surgical procedure in which the
surgeon operates almost exclusively through
a single entry point, typically the patient’s
navel. SPI surgical procedures are possible
for a number of kidney and bladder problems
as well as adrenal tumors and biopsy of abdominal
abnormalities. Our surgeons work with other
surgeons at Southern Maryland Hospital Center
to utilize this technique for many urologic
problems. Ask your surgeon if you are a candidate
for this procedure.
