PROSTIVA RF POST OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

PLEASE HAVE PRE-ARRANGED TRANSPORTATION HOME AFTER YOUR PROCEDURE!

FOLEY CATHETER INSTRUCTIONS:

• You will be discharged with a catheter in your penis and a leg bag to collect the urine from your bladder.

• Empty the leg bag regularly and use the large night bag when you sleep so you will not have to empty as often.

• Our nurse will instruct you how to keep the catheter lubricated with antibiotic.

• If you have severe bladder spasms (feeling like you need to void around the catheter) take the bladder spasm medication once a day. DO NOT TAKE THE MEDICINE ON THE DAY YOUR CATHETER IS TO BE REMOVED- IT MAY MAKE IT MORE DIFFICULT TO URINATE!

• Usually, the catheter will be removed 48 hours after your procedure.

POST OPERATIVE MEDICATIONS

TO PREVENT INFECTION TAKE:
___ Levaquin 500 mg tablet once daily for 3-5 days
___ Other Antibiotic as prescribed by surgeon.

TO TREAT DISCOMFORT OR PAIN TAKE:
___ Motrin 400 mg by mouth every 4-6 hours with food or milk as needed.
___ Motrin 600 mg by mouth every 6 hours with food or milk as needed,
___ Motrin 800 mg by mouth every 8 hours with food or milk as needed.
___ Percocet 5/325 mg tablets 1 or 2 every 6 hours as needed

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER THE PROCEDURE:
After your procedure, the prostate takes 4-12 weeks to heal. During this time you may experience some of the following symptoms:
• Blood in urine for first week then intermittently
• Blood in semen
• Frequent urination or increased urination at night
• Burning and urgency with urination

RECOMMENDATIONS:
• Drink plenty of fluids, especially water
• Avoid bladder irritants such as alcohol or caffeine in drinks such as coffee, tea, soft drinks and chocolate
• It is safe to shower starting the day after the procedure
• It is OK to resume intercourse in 10 days if there is no active bleeding

PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO URINATE OR IF YOU DEVELOP A FEVER OF GREATER THAN 101 DEGREES.
